Sustainable Indoor Environmental Quality (SIEQ) Program

Indoor Air Quality Programs 1

Sustainable Indoor Environmental Quality (SIEQ) Program by ECOthink Group

Numerous studies show that enhancing the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in commercial buildings can lead to increased worker productivity and tremendous economic benefits.   The term IEQ most commonly refers to the thermal environment (air temperature, radiant temperature, air movement, humidity), lighting (quantity and quality of light, including glare issues), acoustics (sound level and speech intelligibility), and indoor air quality (odors, pollutants).  Green building certification systems have acknowledged the benefits of good IEQ and have incorporated certain IEQ enhancing features into their rating systems.   However, being certified for example by LEED does not necessarily mean that building IEQ has been fully optimized.  Figure 1 shows IEQ parameters and their associated health impacts

Weighting of IEQ factors

Some Key Research Findings

  • Higher ventilation rates are associated with improved health and better work and school performance.
  • Poor IAQ can reduce office work performance by 6-9%;
  • Indoor air pollution can be caused by a number of sources including dirty supply air filters.
  • Negative indoor environmental effects on performance were accompanied by negative effects on general symptoms such as headache and concentration.
  • Controlled studies of thermal conditions indicated that performance was optimal between 69 F-72 F
  • Dampness or mold was found to be associated in asthma exacerbation and various respiratory symptoms
